Mr. Ian N.L. Wasson graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA Double Major Political Science – History in 1985 and a BS Landscape Architecture (CSLA Student Award of Merit) in 1993. He was accepted as a member of BCSLA and CSLA in 1997. Ian served as BCSLA Registrar from 2000 to 2004 and while on the board chaired several BCSLA committees and acted as Secretary to the Board of Examiners. In 2004 Ian was elected as a Director to the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB) in Fairfax, VA, and elected subsequently as the first Canadian Secretary (2006), Vice-President (2008), President-Elect (2009) and President (2010). During this period CLARB has newly defined areas of practice through its recent Welfare Study, worked with ASLA to create LACES, completed the most thorough Task Analysis to date, will publish the first Determinates of Success paper on emerging professionals and will have its first joint board meeting with La Sociedad de Arquitectos Paisajistas de México in Ensenada, Mexico.


Since 2002, Ian has been Urban Design Planner for the City Burnaby in British Columbia. In this position he is responsible for all aspects of planning, design, and construction of Burnaby’s 135 km multi-modal urban trail network; Burnaby’s streetscape programs; and the development of urban design policy, standards and details for the City’s four rapidly developing Town Centres.
