Dr. Beverly Sandalack obtained a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Manitoba in 1990 and a PhD in Urban Design from Oxford Brookes University in 1998. She was accepted as a member of MALA and CSLA in 1993 and of the Canadian Institute of Planners in 1997. She has been a member of AALA since 1999, serving as President from 2003-04. She was member and Chair of Calgary’s Urban Design Review Panel 2004-12, member and Co-Chair of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Design Review Panel 2012-14, and has been Chair of the Jury of the International Federation of Landscape Architects Student Design Competition since 2004. Dr. Sandalack received the CSLA Teaching Award in 2018.
Dr. Sandalack is Professor and founding Director of the Master of Landscape Architecture Program at the Faculty of Environmental Design, University of Calgary, and Associate Dean (Academic) since 2012. Previous to this, she practiced landscape architecture with private sector firms in Calgary and Winnipeg, and taught in the Environmental Planning Department at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design from 1994-99, and in the Horticulture Program at Olds College from 1987-90. Dr. Sandalack is Co-Director of The Urban Lab, an interdisciplinary research group at the University of Calgary. With this group and others she has received national and regional CSLA awards, as well as awards from EDRA, the APPI, Calgary Heritage Authority and Alberta Recreation Industry for ten projects to date, including several book publications on urban design and sense of place.
