Legacy Project Awards
The Legacy Project Award program (2016-2018) was the precursor to the Cultural Landscapes Legacy Collection. This award recognized distinguished landscape architecture projects that were ahead of their time, made significant contributions to their communities, demonstrated leadership and innovation, and remain relevant examples of excellence in the profession today. After three years of running the Legacy Award program, it became clear that there were too many important projects to honor just one per year, leading to the creation of the more expansive Legacy Collection.
Recipients of the Legacy Project Award Include:
- The Forks
- University of Guelph Master Plan and Implementation
- Gage Park
More about the Cultural Landscapes Legacy Collection
The Cultural Landscapes Legacy Collection showcases a diverse range of projects and initiatives that have left an enduring legacy, reflecting the leadership, innovation, and vision of landscape architects and their clients. The initiative aims to recognize, promote, and protect these significant works, which:
- Were ‘game changers’ in their time, demonstrating forward-thinking leadership and innovation;
- Continue to contribute meaningfully to their communities and Canadian society;
- Stand as enduring examples of excellence in the profession of landscape architecture.
This collection also serves as a resource for advocating the importance of these landscapes and protecting those at risk of alteration or loss. The initial collection offers a balanced regional representation and highlights:
- The narrative of each place or initiative;
- The role of the landscape architect in its creation;
- The short- and long-term benefits these projects have provided.
This evolving collection will continue to grow, reflecting the ongoing relevance of landscape architecture in Canada and the ways in which these landscapes remain integral to our country’s cultural and environmental heritage.
The CSLA would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed to this initiative, including our colleagues and friends who share our vision and recognize the importance of preserving these cultural landscapes.
