George Dark receives the Governor General's Medal in Landscape Architecture (September 13th, 2018)
I am deeply honoured by my colleagues in the Canadian Association of Landscape Architects on the receipt of the second Governor General’s Medal in Landscape Architecture. It is especially so to join Cornelia Hahn Oberlander in this honour. Over the past 45 years, with Cornelia’s practice on one side of the profession and mine on the other, a broad and magnificent runway has been laid for the profession and it’s contributions by Landscape Architects in CANADA for the future. Today more than ever, concern for long-term stewardship of the environment and the sense of place for urban settlements sits at the forefront of many minds . In Canada, 85% of our population is headed to live in urban centres and how we create them will be critical to the success of our future as a country. I hold these very close to my work personally. To these I add my long standing interests in social innovation and social enterprise - to my personal definition of the practice of landscape architecture. I hope to continue to evolve and encourage others, including all of the amazing cross section of talent in this room. I accept this honour on behalf of all of my colleagues. And I thank my wife Laura for being with me on this journey for the past 45 years. Thank you. - Remarks made by George Dark upon acceptance of the Governor General's Medal in Landscape Architecture
