Nicole Valois, Teaching Award

"I'm very moved to receive this award, and it's a great honor from CSLA! It's recognition of a major aspect of my career. I love students and I love teaching! Teaching is about giving, but it's also about receiving, and if I've grown intellectually and humanely over the course of my career, it's largely thanks to the students I've worked with. My warmest thanks to all those who have contributed to my nomination"

Doug Paterson, Lifetime Achievement Award

"When my father retired from farming in 1944 he spent the next 20 years building a 10 acre park in the horseshoe bend of the Whitemud River in Westbourne, Manitoba. It was an act of love for the whole family.  On a typical summer weekend day as many as 100 cars lined the park road and adjacent village. And when we had free time it was spent visiting beautiful landscapes. In short, I was doomed to be a landscape architect from birth!

When I completed  a BSc from the University of Manitoba in 1964 I  applied and was accepted to take a MLA degree at the University of Michigan. When I I informed my father that I was going to be a landscape architect, he looked at me wistfully, with a far away look, and asked if one could get paid for such an advocation. Well I was- paid and paid well.  But more importantly, I was given the wonderful privilege of being able to see the world through the lens of landscape. It has been a lifelong gift.  To be honored with this lifetime achievement award is like the placing of a ribbon on that gift."
