Vancouver Waterfront Park is a confluence of ideologies, celebrating the importance of interconnectedness and resiliency in a time defined by social disconnection and ecological vulnerability. Situated on the Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington, this 7.3-acre public park merges foreshore restoration with ambitious development plans, honouring the cultural and spiritual connection between a community and its river. Inspired by the Columbia River watershed, the park’s form and character illustrate the region’s natural history and –rich water symbolism. Reclaiming a former industrial site, the project team transformed it into a connected riverfront, re-instilling a sense of identity and pride in the community. Thoughtful integration of public art and interpretive stations demonstrate the importance of early collaboration between disciplines, establishing a robust design narrative. This project demonstrates pragmatism and creativity, the most significant tenet of landscape architecture ; by repairing, strengthening and celebrating our natural systems, we can heal, support and honour our communities.
