South Chilcotin Mountains Provincial Park – Facility Design Concept

The park lies 150km north of Whistler and 95km west of Lillooet with access from Pemberton BC.

The South Chilcotin Mountains Provincial Park is 56,797 hectares of visually spectacular landscape.

The topographical and climatic variations, ranging from glaciers to lower elevation wetlands over a relatively small distance, create conditions for a high degree of ecological diversity.

The team was hired to complete a park wide trail and campground inventory, with Grizzly Bear hazard assessment.

Work was done via float plane drop with mountain bikes on historic horse and wildlife trails.

Steep terrain, deteriorating trail conditions, and inclement weather were all encountered.

A custom application was created for smart phone use with a drop-down menu of project specific information.

Motion detecting trail cameras were installed at trailheads to quantify the levels and type of use.

There is a long history of horse use for the purpose of ranching, guiding, hunting, and tourism.

Over 140km of trails were ridden and inventoried

Trail issues and recommendations were mapped and submitted as interactive maps to BC Parks.

A bear hazard assessment provided direction in reducing & preventing human-bear conflict.

The team worked closely in campground bear risk assessments and creating campground site plans.

A long ride ahead!

The park plays a key role in economic opportunities for nearby communities and tourism operators.

After hours of climbing, finally a well-deserved fast and flowy descent!

In a large remote wilderness landscape, the project illustrates the leadership role of the landscape architect in sustainable conservation and recreation.

Recognition of this type of project will help further the profession of landscape architecture.
