Rooted in Clay - WY Garden in Winnipeg, MB

A ‘forest of roots’ protects the riverbank from collapsing and the property land from erosion.

This garden is situated in a residential area with beautiful views on the serene landscape of the Red River.

This project would never have had happened without the audacity of a Winnipeg family to take a risk!

‘Building materials’ were leftovers that the city produced and threw out.

The controlled re-use, upgrading and transformation of salvaged materials into a new context was the key to this garden

The solvent-free paint sprays its bright colour and luminosity, meets the requirements of our work in their entirety.

A reddish-purple veil of ‘drumsticks‘ between the dancing grasses welcomes people.

Not a single nail or screw was used in this project, only gravity joins beams and boulders, roots and clay.

The WY Garden provides a pleasant and warm welcome already at the entrance.

In spring, the cutting of the grasses is followed by the prelude of the lily-flowered orange tulips.

Seasonal aspects are garden events.

Shortly before the bees and the fish say good-night.

The most beautiful gardens are those you do not want to leave.

Light, views, spaces, gaps, shadows, vegetation and architecture all fit into an eventful whole.

This place invites you to play, sit, linger, look, listen, think, eat, drink and chat away to your heart's content.

Colours, chlorophyll and roses form a satisfying element not only thanks to the rosehips.

The entire garden is a space that has connections to the roots, grasses, trees and the river, a space in gentle motion.

While the Red River is hibernating in its frozen bed, the garden provides habitats for small mammals and insects.

The snow nestles between the blades of grass remaining fluffy and creating a perfect refuge for pukak dwellers.

A friendly space bathed in light.

The WY Garden, based upon fluvial sediments, plants, light and recycled materials proves that ‘pleasant landscapes’ do not need vast resources. This small-scale project works towards a new ecological aesthetic and has the potential to initiate paradigm shifts in design, social behavior and ecology on a larger scale.
