Redmond Downtown Park is a tech-savvy urban park designed to inspire and support diverse community and regional programs. The design transforms the asphalt sea of an auto-parts strip mall into the new civic heart of Redmond, catalyzing economic development in a declining downtown core.
The design is inspired by the buoyant history of the site that was once a peat bog and foraging site for Indigenous peoples and is now the present and future tech capital of the Pacific Northwest. The design team worked closely with community members, event organizers and faculty at Digipen to develop a year-round park that could function flexibly for diverse digital and analog events.
The design features a 550’ diameter circular lawn ringed by an underlit wood boardwalk, a wet/dry plaza with a sculptural pavilion, stage and waterwall, a picnicking bosque, gardens and two stages/lounging platforms. Sculptural seating is interwoven amongst allees, bosques and groves of over 100 new trees.
