A rich mix of distinct eras forms the historical foundation of Old Montreal. In contrast to the traditional way of treating city lighting as a collection of buildings and monuments lit up individually, this presentation creates an overall nocturnal vision expressing its many elements.
Light becomes an instrument revealing successive strata, witness to Montreal's urban evolution. The plan proposes to light the peripheries of the old city, the roads that shape it, its public places, monuments and built-up areas. The selection of illuminated subjects was based on the decision to present three centuries of architectural trends and uses.
Implementation of the specific Lighting Plan program began in 1996 and was spread over seven years. Projects given priority, such as rue Saint-Paul, place Jacques Cartier, rue de La Commune, place d’Youville, the administrative district and place d'Armes have already been completed.
