Residents and visitors to Winnipeg all enjoy going to ‘The Forks’; Winnipeg’s premier waterfront destination which contains a variety of public amenities.
In 2006, Plaza at The Forks was unveiled to the public, providing them with a mixed use destination skate park and urban plaza. The number of guests who use the Plaza @ The Forks as a passive plaza equals the number of the skaters and BMX enthusiasts who ride the park everyday. The overwhelming success of creating a skateable sculpture park has created new industry standard for many municipalities to live up to. Plaza @ The Forks is now a common site for world cup events. It was the only Canadian stop on Tony Hawk’s ‘Secret Skatepark Tour’ and has been quoted as being ‘the best skate plaza in North America’.
The Plaza has been honoured with a Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) National Honour award in 2008. Estimated visits to the plaza at the forks are at over 1,000,000 people per tourist season.
