Creek’s End blends socially and environmentally driven public space interventions with a residential design that abstracts the natural west coast transition between mountain and sea. Improving the landscape beyond the boundaries of private property, the project included work on the adjacent marine foreshore designed to encourage natural sediment deposition and improve habitat, while protecting the site from extreme storm events. Adjacent to the residence, a public right of way that previously contained an asphalt access road with a culverted stream below was transformed into a daylighted stream and winding pedestrian path. The salmon-bearing creek now flows naturally, enriching the site with invaluable habitat. With its cascading terraces softened by channels of textural planting and rivulets of moving water, Creek’s End enhances its social and ecological context while providing a uniquely westcoast sanctuary for its owners.
