This is a considerable feat to achieve in two years - getting eighteen municipalities to work to a common goal and undertake this amount of environmental analysis. The explicit imagery developed will help to facilitate first, an understanding of the information, and second, agreement between the users of this document.
The Calgary Metropolitan Environmental Strategy is a model example of the use of regional landscape planning analytical tools for the conservation of environmental resources. The project identified essential patterns of ecological infrastructure and proposed strategies for the protection of these resources and the mitigation of development impacts. The project produced a comprehensive set of spatially explicit information for use in the Calgary Metropolitan Plan. The models and analyses identified lands to be excluded from future development and will also inform future strategic environmental protection and conservation initiatives.
