Submit your Suggestions of Significant Cultural Landscapes
Note: the workshop planned for September 20th, 2022, has been cancelled and will be re-scheduled at a later date.
The CSLA’s Committee on Cultural Landscapes and Legacy wishes to create an online collection of significant cultural landscapes across Canada.
The key objectives of this project are to:
- List and celebrate notable cultural landscapes in all their variety which have resonated within the professional community and country over time and, advocate for their awareness and protection
- Explore ways to mark these sites and acknowledge their significance via a mixed-media platform (with data, imagery, audio visual and other research elements available via a web portal)
Ultimately, the goal of this project is to create a collection of 25 places that exemplify the wide range of cultural landscape treasures across Canada by 2024.
Are there sites which you think should be included in CSLA’s database of cultural landscapes?
Which of your region’s significant historic places should be recognized by the CSLA?
You can submit your suggestions of cultural landscapes that you would like to see in the final collection here (SUBMISSIONS CLOSE ON OCTOBER 15, 2022)

Alan Duncan Memorial
To the dear friends of my brother Alan Slater Duncan,
October 2nd will mark one year since Alan's passing. Covid made it difficult to plan a celebration of life for Alan, but now we have been able to plan the celebration for October 15th. We will meet at the base lodge near his cabin on Cypress mountain before 1:00 pm. At 1 o'clock, a piper will lead a procession up to the site he had chosen for the scattering of his ashes. At the cabin we will have a celebration with treats and "copious amounts of cheap champagne "per his wishes. I think this will probably go from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. We will start losing light after that, even with the lantern procession, so bring a flashlight too.
Please be aware that this is about a 15 minute climb up to the base lodge, and another 15 up the trail to the cabin. It may be quite strenuous. Please wear durable footwear and layers suitable for the weather.
For those that cannot make it, we are going to try to record as much as possible to post on this Facebook page and elsewhere. Please RSVP if you can make it so we can have an idea of how much food to put out. You can call or text Peter Duncan at cell (416) 930-5111 or email pdunca2464@rogers.com. (no n on duncan).

Forging ahead during the pandemic: How selected service industries bounced back in 2021
In 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, several service industries in Canada suffered large financial setbacks despite government support programs. The pandemic led to many changes in the Canadian economy, including remote work and new ways of reaching customers and producing services. Using administrative data, such as goods and services tax (GST) revenue, this study assesses how the recovery began to unfold in selected service industries in 2021, even as supply chain disruptions, labour shortages, skill gaps and inflationary pressures intensified.

MLA 50th Anniversary - Invitation To Join The Homecoming Gathering on Friday September 23rd at 5pm
We invite students, alumni, teachers, support staff, and friends to join us in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program and the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Manitoba.
Events will be held during the academic year of 2022-2023 and include the homecoming gathering, community planting, invited speakers, alumni exhibitions and fundraising for a 50th Anniversary Scholarship.
The graduate program in Landscape Architecture at the University of Manitoba was Canada's first of its kind. It resulted from the vision of the late Dean of Architecture, John A. Russell. Its establishment was facilitated by the appointment of Alexander Rattray as Head of the program in July 1969. The initial three-year graduate course of study was offered through the University's Natural Resource Institute in 1970. The Master of Landscape Architecture program was formally accepted by the Province of Manitoba in 1972.
