Balancing the visionary with the pragmatic, the plan proposes significant enhancements to the University’s central green spaces, gateways and pathway system as well as improvements to the major streets and intersections that border the campus. The University of Toronto recognized the need for a comprehensive framework for its long-neglected open spaces to create a functionally and aesthetically unified campus whose physical environment reflects its academic excellence. Urban Strategies created a plan that provides a clear direction for the future feel and image of the campus while responding to a range of development opportunities. Balancing the visionary with the pragmatic, the plan proposes significant enhancements to the University’s central green spaces, gateways and pathway system as well as improvements to the major streets and intersections that border the campus. It also calls for extensive tree planting aimed at restoring the leafy oasis the campus once was. Six demonstration projects described how the Open Space Plan can be implemented.
