The Pedestrian Campus project revitalizes the four historic axes of UBC's academic campus: Main Mall, University Boulevard, Agricultural Road and Memorial Road. These axes are recognized as the organizational spines of the campus and form an iconic image of the university. Enhancements strengthened the clarity of campus and made the pedestrian the priority by eliminating vehicles.
On all four avenues, the pedestrian experience was elevated by replacing roadbeds with high-quality paving materials level with the grass, creating linear walkways set in a formal landscape of grass and mature shade trees. Seating, bike racks and decorative lighting were added, as were bioswales, rain gardens, and two new water features. All these changes improved usability, sustainability, environmental quality and safety.
The project aims to invigorate UBC's public spaces, encourage informal outdoor learning, improve the health of students, faculty and staff, and instill pride and a strong sense of place.
The design provides a frame and forum for a range of engaging and transformative academic and social experiences. It unifies the campus, giving it a memorable and timeless dignity.
