IBI Group was retained by the City of Kitchener to redesign the core streets of its downtown, which involved developing a Streetscape Master Plan for King Street and the City Centre District that follows a “pedestrian-first” theme. The plan was based on the principle that investment in a high quality public realm will serve as a catalyst for private sector investment, intensification, and the quality public realm will serve as a catalyst for private sector investment, intensification, and the renewal of Downtown Kitchener. The key elements of the project include the redesign of City Hall Plaza and Speakers Corner, the creation of a “flexible sidewalk/parking system” with removable bollards and custom mountable curbs, bioretention planters, trees, seating, lighting and public art.
