"Better City, Better Life" was the EXPO 2010 slogan in Shanghai. Most of the nation pavilions migrated after the show yet the new Chenshan Botanical Garden remained. The 509 acre garden was part of the Expo 2010. The official opening was in 2010, April 26th. 1.2 million visitors enjoyed the garden in 2011.
The transformation of the site is effected on the basis of three motifs, which form the body of the garden: the ring, the hill, and the water in the eye of the ring. These three spatial motifs constitute the garden's soul.
Cross cultural - This project promotes landscape architecture as a leading design discipline with the ability to integrate a wide range of different cultural perspectives.
Interdisciplinary - This complex project involved the development and evaluation of strategies, models and techniques in collaboration with architects, engineers and botanists from different countries in an exemplary way.
Environmental sensitivity - A series of measurements and techniques are applied in this pilot project like green roofs, green facades, active and passive use of solar energy, biogas plant, groundwater thermal power, and different systems of water purification.
Acceptance and success - This garden is among the largest botanical gardens worldwise and functioned as a metropolitan oasis for 1.2 million urban dwellers in 2011.
Precious treasure - This 206 hectare garden represents the epitome of luxury in a country where space is at a premium and exemplary highlights the power and need of green open spaces in the midst of hectic rising new buildings.
